Letter to the editor 7/1/01

The following letter was published in the J Post Crescent:

Relationship with God helped change orientation

The freedom of religion and the freedom of speech are the foundation of our republic. Freedom of speech is one way we not only articulate our beliefs, but also inform others of them by presenting them in thought provoking and persuasive ways.

The Post Crescent recently supported those freedoms in the article titled "Gone Straight." That article broke through the silence and reported the fact that change from homosexuality is possible.

I have personally experienced the significant changes that are possible. In my life, I developed an intimate relationship with Jesus and allowed Him to heal the past wounds of my life. The changes God has made in my life are more than mere behavior modification; they also involve attractions and identity.

Sexual orientation is far too complex for anyone to arrogantly state there is one simplistic cause for homosexuality. This includes biological causes; in fact, there is no scientific study that has withstood peer review that shows homosexuals are born that way. This is why we use a spiritual approach at Reclamation Resource Center and don't rely on techniques such as Reparative Therapy.

A study released May 18 by Dr. Robert Spitzer provides data to support the fact that homosexuals can change. Using proven and scientific methodology, Dr. Spitzer found that of the 200 people he interviewed, 66% of the males and 44% of the females showed "good heterosexual functioning." Dr. Spitzer came to this conclusion by using indicators of sexual orientation that included fantasies and attractions as well as behavior. He drew his sample from people who said they had pursued change and found some degree of shift in their orientation.

To dismiss those of us who have found change as liars or as being in denial is inappropriate and fails to address both scientific and anecdotal evidence.
